Claudia’s Senior Session in Rockford, Michigan | Grand Rapids Senior Photographer

Claudia’s senior session was one of those shoots that felt easy from the very beginning. We met at a park in Rockford, Michigan, and the location ended up being such a good fit for her — lots of greenery, water, open space, and enough variety to make the whole gallery feel different without ever needing to leave the park.

And can we talk about her style?? I loved it.

The oversized plaid, loose jeans, black tank, rings, and guitar all felt so natural to her and gave the session this effortlessly cool, slightly editorial feel. Senior photos are always better when they actually look like the person in them, and Claudia absolutely brought her own personality into this one.

One of my favorite things about senior sessions is finding ways to incorporate the things someone genuinely loves. Claudia is a dancer, so toward the end of the session we leaned into movement and created some images that felt completely different from a traditional senior portrait. Watching her move through the space and getting to photograph something that is such a big part of who she is made those photos some of my favorites from the entire gallery.

We also brought out her guitar for part of the session, which gave us another little piece of her personality to work with. I always tell my seniors that props don’t need to feel like “props.” Bringing an instrument, sports gear, books, a car, or anything else that is actually part of your life can make your photos feel so much more personal.

And then, of course, we still made plenty of time for the classic portraits too.

That balance is what I love most about senior photography — getting the photos that feel timeless enough for parents and graduation announcements, while also creating the slightly weird, artsy, blurry, movement-filled images that feel more like you. Claudia was completely down to experiment, which meant we got to play around with intentional motion blur and some more creative compositions throughout the evening.

It was such a fun session, and I love how the final gallery feels relaxed, confident, creative, and completely her.
